PAPER PROTOTYPE

INTRODUCTION

The interface of the machine is very important because the user will interact with the interface of the machine went using it. The design of the interface must be clear and tidy to make the user can use the machine easily. The student needs to find three difficulties stage of the interface which is easy, average and hard. The student must improvise the design the found by design the new interface that can cover the founded interface. They must measure how far the user enable to understand the interface design based on certain consideration like the user ability to access the machine, the alternative way to deliver the instruction and situation. There are three stages of the machine that chosen by the student for designing a new interface prototype:
·         The machine for easy difficulties design is air conditioner switch button.
·         The machine for average difficulties design is DVD Player.
·         The machine for hard difficulties design is bank queue ticket machine.

EASY DIFICULTIES DESIGN

a)    Figure 1 is the simple design of air conditioner switch button that we usually met in our daily life which has only two buttons; one for switch on and another one is for switch off.

The advantages of this design are it looks very simple switch design that easy to understand and use because both of the button are labelled and help the user to remember the button easier because it designing in different colour which is green for “ON” button and red for “OFF” button. Besides that, this design also well known by people nowadays because the recently met the button everywhere. But it has several advantages that need to improvise in future. The disadvantages of this design are it does not have temperature adjustment button that enable the user set it based on their need. The temperature already set up by the developer that just allows the user to switch on and off the button switch only. This design needs support from remote control to adjust the setting of the air conditioner. If the remote controls are broken the user cannot adjust the temperature of the air conditioner manually.  





b)    Figure 2 shows the new design for air conditioner switch. This design is improvise from a design in figure 1. It provides the temperature adjustment button that consists of labelled number for the temperature scale in Celsius format.

The advantages of the design is this design provide the temperature adjustment button that allow the user set the temperature they want based on the scale provided. They need to rotate the button until the triangle sign stop at the temperature number on scale. It also works as the alternative ways If the air conditioner remote are broken, the user still can adjust the temperature manually at the switch. So, the air conditioner still can use like usual. Event it have some changes but the user still can understand the button because the designing of the on and off button still use the same button like previous air conditioner switch but in different arrangement. But the user needs to adjust the temperature manually if the air conditioner not provides the remote control.

AVERAGE DIFFICULTIES DESIGN


a)    The normal design of the DVD Player that sold in market. This design currently well known by public user because most of the DVD Player interface designs are using same symbols for their button.

             The advantages of this design are it is the simple interface that contains the familiar symbol which is usually used for the DVD player button that enables the user to understand the function of the button easily and the attire button can work by press the button provided. So, by understanding the symbols only, the user can use the button easily. On the other hand, this design have several weaknesses which is this design not follow the current technology development that nowadays pen drive device already use as one of the media storage can be used in every machines which have the USB sub. This design show that the DVD players just functioning as the DVD Player only that can read the   two of disk which is DVD and CD.

b)    The improvise design for DVD Payer from only one function that shows at figure 3 to multifunction as shown in figure 5 below.

The new design for DVD Player is the independent machine that has its own speaker. So, the DVD Player can works without connecting another devices or machines to play a song without videos. The DVD Player provides the USB2.0 that allows it to connect with pen drive and others alternative media storage that sold in market nowadays. It is also works as MP3 Player and has volume adjustment button for speaker provided. So, it will help to reduce the power supply at house because the user does not need to open both television and DVD player if they just want to play the song. It also provide toggle button to switch the DVD Player to MP3 Player.


The volume adjustment button was added in this design.

HARD DIFICULTIES DESIGN

a)    The design of the figure 7 is the interface of the bank queue ticket machine which is has s touch screen sensor. The user just need to touch on the screen option button then the numbered ticket will print for the user. The printed ticket based on the matter they want to do.

This machine is very useful because it can make the bank matter become smoothly because from the queue number, the banker can know what the matter that client want to do. It makes the attire matter more manageable. The interface design of the bank queue ticket machine in figure 7 is a very simple design with simple instruction. The attire buttons are touch screen button that designing in several of colour for each of the button. The button also labelled with the text to make user know what matter they going to choose. But the interface is not convenient to disable people because it do not has any sound alert and sound instruction that enable people who are cannot see or cannot read to use this machine. 
The user can recognise the button by remembering the colour of the button.


b)    The new design for the bank queue ticket machine interface. This design created to improvise the previous design at figure 7 and overcome the previous design weaknesses.

The design shows in figure 8 has an audio support to help user to be more understand how to use the machine. It is also designing with a speaker that is an equipment to make the audio deliver clearly. The new design also consists of three buttons that allows the user to choose the language which are Malay, English and Mandarin language. So, the user can use the machine with their familiar language. It directly can help the user to understand the instruction well. The uses of the buttons style and colour are similar with the previous design.
The attire button in the interface are labelled to enable user know the instruction and function of each button provided in machine. The additional function provided which is the speaker make the machine being more convenient and helpful to every people.




REFLECTION

From this assignment the student can know about the usability of interface design to make the product design suitable to every people as known as user by giving a clear instruction. The ability of the machine to works in multifunction is known as pervasive machine. It also let the student being more creative on improvise the current design to make it suitable for pervasive machine that have more than one function.

CONCLUSION


The student can classify which difficulties stage of interface design for machines that they chose. The attire machines that chosen by the student already approved by the lecturer in class lesson before they are come out with a new interface design prototype for the machine chosen. This assignment required student to be more creative on thinking to designing the good interface prototype for each machine chosen.
